Thomas Cousins is the late husband of New York senator, Andrea Stewart-Cousins.
Thomas’ wife was reelected in 2018 and became the leader of the New York State Senate, making history as the Senate’s first female majority leader.
Born September 2, 1950; Senator Stewart-Cousins earned her Bachelor of Science Degree from Pace University and her teaching credentials in Business Education from Lehman College. In 2008, she earned her Masters of Public Administration from Pace University. Prior to entering public service, she spent twenty years in the private sector, working in sales and marketing for New York Telephone/AT&T for thirteen years and also worked as a reporter and teacher.
The Yonkers resident has a history with firsts. She was first elected to the Senate in 2006 and was elected by her colleagues to serve as Leader of the Senate Democratic Conference in December 2012, becoming the first female leader of a legislative conference in New York State history.
Also in 1992, Andrea Stewart-Cousins became the first African American to serve as Director of Community Affairs for the City of Yonkers.

Thomas Cousins was born on March 4, 1944 to Thomas and Agnes (Anderson) Cousins in Brooklyn, NY where he was raised. Mr. Cousins attended Power Memorial High School and Pace University.
2. He was in the National Guard
According to his obituary, Thomas Cousins served as a medic in the National Guard during the Vietnam War years.
3. He made a career in sales
He worked as a salesman for NYNEX for over 28 years; then worked in sales for Omega Moulding in Long Island for over ten years.
4. He is survived by the couple’s children
Thomas and Andrea Cousins became husband and wife on May 5, 1979 and during their marriage welcomed two sons Kevin and Steven; and one daughter, Candice.
She and her late husband, had three children together and according to her website, Andrea is also a proud grandmother to at least four grandchildren including, Kendall and Kyle.
5. They were married for 28-years prior to his death
The late Thomas J. Cousins died, November 26, 2007 at age 63 –at Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan. At the time of his passing, Andrea Stewart-Cousins and her family requested donations be made to the American Cancer Society in memory of Thomas Cousins.
