Tammy Snyder Murphy
Tammy Snyder Murphy is the lovely wife of New Jersey’s governor-elect, Phil Murphy. Her husband has recently become The Garden State’s newest governor.
Tammy’s husband is a financer who also served as the U.S. ambassador to Germany from 2009 until 2013. He was born Philip Dunton Murphy on August 16, 1957. He grew up in Massachusetts, the youngest of two children in the Boston area. Though his family had little money, he managed to get into Harvard and originally harbored thoughts of becoming a musical theater actor.
He was also an economics major at the Ivy League school and was then accepted to grad school at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He went onto work as an intern on Wall Street at Goldman Sachs during the summer of 1982.
In the early 1990s, Murphy moved to Frankfurt, Germany to lead the company’s Central Europe operations. In the late 1990s, he moved to Hong Kong to lead the firm’s Asian division. Murphy and his family moved from Hong Kong to Middletown in 2000, and he retired in 2006 as a senior director at the firm.
In 2005, then-Gov. Richard Codey appointed Murphy chair of a task force on New Jersey’s pension crisis. Murphy then served as finance chair at the Democratic National Committee from 2006 to 2009. Along the way, Murphy met Barack Obama, and when Obama became president in 2009, he named Murphy the country’s ambassador to Germany.

Tammy Snyder and Phil met in the late 80’s while they both worked at Goldman Sachs. The story goes that Phil took years in asking her for a date. When he finally did, they were married within six months.
Tammy Snyder wedded Phil Murphy in 1994. Mrs. Murphy is often at his side at campaign events.
The couple has welcomed four children into their marriage. Tammy Snyder Murphy is the proud mom of Josh, 19; Emma, 17; Charlie, 15; and Sam, 13.
The petite wife and mom of four also spent time working in the finance industry. According to Jump Start New Jersey, she spent time working at Investcorp in Europe. But perhaps her most important position is being her husband’s top adviser. During her husband’s campaign Tammy’s involvements certainly caught the attention of media. She became a fixture of the campaign, appearing alongside her husband at countless events, delivering speeches, raising money — even proofreading news releases.
Most recently, Tammy who has served on a number of committees and organizations –is listed as the Chair of New Start New Jersey & Secretary of the Climate Reality Action Fund.
