Matthew Hoffman is the ex-spouse of Democrat Rep. Katie Porter, who continues making headlines for her tough questioning of CEOs and Gov Officials.
Katie Porter became one of the most successful freshmen in the United States Congress House of Representatives. Trump officials and CEOs from big Pharma, Oil, and tech have been no match for her tough line of questioning.
Behind her success is a story of a woman who has had to overcome a lot of adversity. She’s the only single, working mom among her peers in Congress. It’s been a juggling act for Katie, who has to raise three kids alone.
Her ex-husband remains to be an elusive figure and rarely makes the news. Here is what we know about Matthew Hoffman’s bio:
Katie Porter Family Before Marriage to Matthew Hoffman
Long before meeting Matthew Hoffman, Katie was a down-to-earth farm town girl from Fort Dodge, Iowa, which is now home to about 25,000 residents.
In a recent Father’s Day tribute to her father, Dan Porter, Katie admitted that she was not an easy kid to parent as she had a cheeky attitude.
Katie Porter’s Parents were regular folks who had to work very hard for everything. Dan Porter was a third-generation farmer before becoming a banker.
Katie Porter’s sister, Dr. Emily Porter, no doubt shared a room with her sibling, as the family inhabited a two-bedroom one-bathroom house constructed by their great-grandfather.
Liz Porter, Katie’s mom, went on to host “Fons & Porter’s Love of Quilting,” a public-access show. Dr. Emily Porter MD, an Emergency physician, emulated her sister’s famous use of teaching aids to explain “How Covid-19 is Spread.”
The Couple Married in 2003 Before Deciding to Part Ways in 2013
At 29 years old, Katie Porter wedded Matthew Hoffman in 2003. The couple supposedly had three children together: Luke, 14; Paul, 12; and Betsy, 8 (ages as of 2020, according to an article feature on Elle).
That means that their firstborn child was probably born in 2006, three years after their marriage.
In March 2013, Katie Porter apparently filed for divorce, and the couple continued sharing a house in Irvine, California, during the divorce proceedings. She was Matt Hoffman’s wife for 10 years.
Matthew Hoffman Domestic Abuse Allegations
Speaking to Laura Bassett of the Huffpost in 2018, Katie detailed the physical and emotional abuse she experienced in the final days leading up to her divorce.
On a fateful morning in April 2013, he stormed into the bathroom as she was flossing; then proceeded to rip the floss from her hands before punching the wall with such force that he shuttered the light switch faceplate. Matthew Hoffman later told the judge that Katie was too slow, which made him furious. It’s not clear if Matthew Hoffman was an abuser before the divorce.
In her 2020 interview with Elle Magazine, Katie said that the worst things that happened in her marriage were a result of the acute stress of the divorce.
There were other incidents. He would bang on her bedroom door at night, forcing Katie to barricade herself in by propping a chair against the door. Matthew once held the door to her car and prevented her from going to a school meeting. He also shoved their one-year daughter as she was sitting on a high chair across the floor and threatened to kill himself. Matthew even took to insulting her in front of their kids.

Matthew Hoffman unhinged, and violent outbursts came to light during the custody hearings. He even had to spend a couple of days in jail for domestic abuse. The judge awarded her full custody of Luke, Paul, and Betsy.
She Was Attacked for Being a Divorced Single Mom, and For Placing a Restraining Order on Matthew Hoffman
The fact that she was divorced and going to raise three kids while representing the 45th congressional district of California was a clutch that her opponents were willing to use to their advantage. A poll revealed that a majority of voters also had reservations about the single mother’s ability to do her job effectively.
Her leading opponent, Dave Min, went on to say that her kids were really messed up because of the restraining order she had placed on her husband. Speaking to Laura Bassett in 2018, she declared that she did not have a shady background. She only ended her failed marriage and protected her kids.
In a campaign video posted on her Facebook page, Porter went on to say that “When real people run for office, they are going to bring real-world experiences with them….I was a victim of domestic violence.” Her willingness to confront the issue seemed to resonate with voters.
