The couple met at a USO dance for midshipmen and West Point cadets. Ever since they met she played a key role in his life; Clark was born Jewish, raised Baptist and converted to Catholicism, Gertrude’s religion around the time they married in June 1967.
The West Point cadet met Kingston, a native of Brooklyn, during her days as a Wall Street executive assistant.
The couple had one son, now a grown man, Wesley Jr. He saw his son, for the first time while at the Valley Forge Hospital
Wesley Clark’s wife Gertrude Kingston Clark, widely called Gert, is used to being on her own from his long stint in the military. At first reluctant to make speeches in 2003 when he announced his political run as a republican for the presidency she stood by her husband on the campaign trail.
The Clark’s have been married for 46 years, and they are still not divorced although her husband in now dating 30-year-old Shauna Mei as of last year.
As with many Generals wives, Gert is used to ceremonial events, used to hosting big parties, and used to getting involved in charity work, The couple lived in Little Rock.
During Clark’s political career she was sent by her husband to Albuquerque, N.M., and 300 people showed up to hear Mrs. Clark. She spoke to the audiences mainly about her husband’s military accomplishments, his interest in heath, care and education; she looked self-assured, perfectly poised.
She became an expert at reassuring the audience that America’s veterans would not be forgotten in a Clark administration. Her words at the time
“The veterans are very important to our country and I think many of them have been forgotten”
Wonder how she feels now 10 years later; that unfortunately she has been forgotten by her own husband.
Gertrude “Gert” Kingston Clark was born December 1, 1943 in Brooklyn. She used to work as an Executive assistant and turned military wife. She was also in the Arkansas Cancer Research Center Foundation Fund Board. She is a high school graduate.
In 2000 US Defense Secretary William Cohen awarded Wesley Clark’s wife Gertrude Clark, at a handover ceremony at the U.S. European Command headquarters.
