Christine Furrh is the woman Tom DeLay married. They have known each other since attending Calallen High School where Christine was a cheerleader and rode horses in the school rodeo. She was also in basketball, track, volleyball, Student Council and elected Miss Calallen High School. She graduated from Houston Baptist University.
When Tom was a sophomore in college, they got married. It was on August 26, 1967. Five years later, they had a daughter, Danielle who is now a professional ballroom dancer. They also fostered two children. Both she and Tom have been very involved with foster care, having founded a “Christ-centered” foster community called “Rio Bend”, near Richmond, Texas.
Christine was a teacher and a volunteer as a court appointed Special Advocate for children in foster care. When her husband began his political career she stayed in Texas, looking after family business. She has always better a strong support to her husband, and has stood behind him through all the good and bad times. When political scandal broke around Tom, she remained by his side.
After some years of waiting to know what his final fate would be, an Austin appeals court has overturned the conviction of the former U.S. House Majority Leader on charges related to a scheme to influence Texas elections, an attorney said Thursday. The vote by the 3rd Court of Appeals in Austin was 2-1, said Brian Wice, the Houston attorney who represented DeLay in his appeal. DeLay was acquitted.
Not many wives have that strength to be supportive of their husbands through so much pressure, and so much uncertainty. I think we can admire Christine for being just that- a strong wife.
