It’s always heartwarning to see a happy couple, especially in show business or politics. One of these couples is Evelyn McGee-Colbert and Stephen Colbert. They presently live in Montclair, New Jersey with their three children Madeline, Peter and John.
Unbelievably, they grew up living a few blocks away from each other, but never met until 1990 at the Spoleto Festival in Charleston, South Carolina. She is the daughter of prominent Charleston civil litigator Joseph McGee, of the firm Buist Moore Smythe McGee. She attended the University of Virginia’s College of Arts and Sciences and graduated in 1985. She double majored in Drama and English. Evelyn also participated in several summer productions of the Heritage Repertory Theatre, now the Heritage Theatre Festival during this time.
Although she is mainly a stay at home mom, she has appeared and or collaborated with her husband on different projects, among them in an episode of Strangers with Candy where she played the part of Colbert mother. She also had an uncredited part as a nurse in the series pilot and a credited one as his wife Clair in the film. Her birthday is on July 27.
In May of 2011, she and Stephen donated a gift to her Alma Mater, which in part made possible for 16 incoming first-years to participate in a new Collage Arts Scholar program at the University of Virginia. In May of this year, Stephen Colbert gave the Commencement Speech there.
Evelyn McGee-Colbert is a woman who likes to stay somewhat out of the limelight and be, in the words of Stephen, “the love of my life.”
